Here is a picture of a Series 1B 1967 (yes, we know that the 1967 Interceptors were supposed to have chrome gas tanks, the owner of this bike bought it new, and insists that it had this tank originally! It has been repainted, though. Could be that RE was using up some left over parts from the previous year when they built this one) Royal Enfield Interceptor on display at our 1984 May Show. To the left is a Series 2 1968 Interceptor, and barely visible behind that is a Series 1A 1966 (yes, we know it has the incorrect chrome gas tank, and no, the owner of the 1967 bike didn't want to trade!) Interceptor. The Series 1A and 1B Interceptors are essentially the same with the exception of the ignition systems, the 1A having a Lucas K2F magneto, and the 1B using a special capacitor-discharge system. The Series 2 Interceptor used a standard type coil and points ignition, and also differed from the Series 1 by using a wet-sump crankcase, instead of the separate oil tank cast into the rear of the crankcase. With this arrangement the oil was carried in a space below the crankshaft and didn't have to rely on a return pump to scavenge it out of the crankcase as in the dry sump motors.
